The role of Banking in growth of economy as well as that of an individual can't be denied. For this the continuous intake of specialized personnel becomes imperative.

Recruitment in Banks takes place at two levels :-
i) One as Probationary Officers.
ii) Second at Clerical Level.

A Probationary Officer can reach up to the level of Chairman of a bank, you will be surprised to know that all the heads of PSBs have started their career as a PO only. Normally, the probation period is of two years in which the officer is exposed to different types of bank related work. There are frequent transfers during probation period. Once the probation period is over the officer is appointed as an Assistant Manager and gets his or her permanent posting. Now-a-days, some banks are placing officers as Deputy Managers also, provided they pass the test conducted by the bank. After confirmation officers can be posted in specific areas of banking.

Eligibility Criteria
i) Educational Qualification: For PO exam student must have a degree from recognized university or any other equivalent qualification by the Govt. of India.
ii) Age Limit: The candidate must be between the age of 21 and 30 years.
Remark: Reservations and Age relaxation are according to the Govt. notification.

Selection Procedure
Candidates are called for a written examination which will be both descriptive and objective. Question papers remain in bilingual form(i.e. Hindi and English). Objective type examination consists of Test of Reasoning, Quantitative aptitude, General awareness and English language. It is important for the candidates to note that there will be negative marking for wrong answers in the objective Type test. There will also be a descriptive type question paper to be answered either in Hindi or English at the candidate's option. Descriptive paper consists of a short question on a given situation, which a candidate has to comprehend, analyze and express his views thereon.

A candidate will have to pass in each of the tests but marks obtained only in Test of Reasoning, Quantitative Aptitude and General Awareness will be reckoned for merit ranking. Only those candidate will be called for interview who qualify on the basis of order of merit in written examination. For clerical exam, test pattern includes questions on Ability, Test of Reasoning, Quantitative, English and Clerical Aptitude.

Combined Entrance Test by IBPS
Around nineteen Indian public sector banks have decided to conduct a common entrance test to select suitable candidates for filling existing/future vaccines in their firms. The exam will be conducted under a platform designed by IBPS, and the scores will have validity for one year from the date of result. The first IBPS exam is scheduled on September 18 2011 and applications will be accepted until August 3.

IBPS Exam pattern and syllabus:
IBPS will organize a written examination comprising Objective and Descriptive papers. Objective section carries 225 marks and should be completed in 150 minutes. The 250 questions in this section will include Verbal/Numeric Reasoning, General English, questions related to Banking/Insurance/Investment sector, Computers, and typical quantitative aptitude. The Descriptive section (60 minute) will analyze the English writing caliber of the candidate, and it carries 25 marks.
